In an important passage on page 332 of The Humanities, Sayre discusses the “chivalric code.” The chivalric code summarizes the behavior expected of knights in the middle ages. The chivalric code, or code of knighthood, expresses the values and behavior of the ideal knight: “The chevalier was a knight[….] and he was guided by a strict, though unwritten, code of conduct: courage in battle, loyalty to his lord and peers, and a courtesy verging on reverence toward women

The knight was also expected to be a sincere Christian, believing in God and practicing Christian values such as mercy, kindness, and self-control.

Compare and contrast this description of the ideal knight with the character Erec and one Other Knight in Erec and Enide.
