VI.I.4 Facilitate project management by integrating work efforts

It is important to understand the need to market the healthcare business and the process for creating a marketing plan and materials to bring in the customers. It is also important to research the external market, draw conclusions, plan a strategy, and convince your internal stakeholders that your plan is the best plan to get the job done. Imagine yourself as the new administrator for a non-profit vaccine clinic that is governed by a board of directors that will soon open for business. You need to tell the world about the great new products and services you offer and how your business is more just a flu vaccine clinic and you offer much more for the customer. Before you actually take action with the public you need to convince the board of directors that your plan is the best plan for the business.

Instructions

Part 1: For this week’s assignment, you will be creating a marketing tool for your practice to advertise the new vaccine clinic. You can either create a brochure to send out in the mail or posters to display around town. Consider your audience (who are you targeting?) while you create this item. Think about what would catch your eye as a customer when putting this together. You can create this tool in Word as a poster with clip art, etc. (watch copyright information), or as a brochure or submit it in PowerPoint form. Your grade will be based upon how effective your tool is at addressing the target audience, how well you catch their attention, the quality of the information you provide them, and the overall look of the tool.

Part 2: Create a professional letter to the board explaining your marketing ideas and how you plan to reach the target market of the business through your brochure or poster and what you plan to include in it. The letter should include information that is important for the board to know about the marketing tool, your analysis and conclusions about the potential impact of the marketing tool, anticipated reactions of the potential customers, and suggestions on what board members could do to help.

Examine the use of critical business indicators to assist in financial decision making for a health care department or organization. Assessing Critical Business Indicators

Examine the use of critical business indicators to assist in financial decision making for a health care department or organization.
Assessing Critical Business Indicators

In order to be a sound financial manager, you need to know the fiscal intricacies of your organization or department. Decisions about future expenditures should be based on careful calculations of organizational or departmental needs. By using critical business indicators, you can more effectively balance the fiscal realities of your budget with the functional demands of your department.

In this Discussion, you examine the use of critical business indicators to assist in financial decision making for a health care department or organization.

The Instructor has assigned a problem from the Zelman, McCue, and Glick online text.

To prepare:

Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on how critical business indicators can be used in financial decision making.

For the problem you were assigned, complete the calculations and then answer the questions included.

Select a different business indicator than you used in your problem. Reflect on how this critical indicator could assist a nurse manager to more effectively balance the demands placed on a department while still meeting budgetary constraints. Find an example.

Assess the ramifications of making a decision without having the types of information these business indicators provide.

If it was imperative for you to make a certain purchase or launch a new initiative, but your break-even point was calculated as higher than the expected revenues, what are your options?

Post your response to the question you were assigned and explain your reasoning. Suggest how nurse managers could use the critical business indicator you selected to both meet the needs of a department or organization and remain within budget. Provide a specific example. Describe potential ramifications of making a financial decision without using business indicators. Specify strategies for addressing a situation where a break-even point is higher than expected revenues.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:

Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research in the Walden Library.

Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.

Prepare a report in a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document comparing the US long-term care system with the long-term care system of a developing country.
Long-Term Care Today

Demographics and epidemiological transitions result in dramatic changes in the health needs of individuals throughout the globe. In recent times, there has been increase in the prevalence of long-term disability in the population—causing increasing need for long-term care services. In addition, the present developing world is experiencing an increase in the demand for long-term care services at a cost much lower than industrialized countries.

Prepare a report in a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document comparing the US long-term care system with the long-term care system of a developing country. Research the Internet to find relevant content.

Include the following information in your report:

What are the chronic illness trends of each country?

What is the incidence and prevalence of elderly consumers of long-term care in the United States as compared to your chosen developing country?

How does each country expect these numbers to change in the next ten years?

What are the main characteristics of the elderly population in both the countries? Is there any difference in the long-term health care needs of consumers in both the countries? Provide a rationale for your answer.

Who are the institutional and noninstitutional caregivers in both the countries? Support your answer with relevant examples. Explain the factors that affect care giving in each country.

Is there any difference in the status of quality of care of the elderly consumers in the United States as compared to the developing country?

Is there any difference in the health care cost provided in the United States as compared to the developing country? Define any social support that may exist to cover health care in both countries.

Summarize the history of when, how, and why managed care was developed. Be sure to investigate the perspectives about managed care from the vantage of both healthcare providers and patients.

Summarize the history of when, how, and why managed care was developed. Be sure to investigate the perspectives about managed care from the vantage of both healthcare providers and patients.
Managed Care

In the United States, managed care is becoming an increasingly popular method of administering healthcare. It influences the clinical behavior of providers, as it combines the payment and delivery of healthcare into a single system, the purpose of which is to control the cost, quality, and access of healthcare services for a single bracket of health plan enrollees (Scutchfield, Lee, & Patton, 1997).

Yet, managed care often evokes strong or negative reactions from healthcare providers because they are paid a fixed amount for treating their patients, regardless of the actual cost, which may influence their level of efficiency. This can challenge the relationships between doctors and patients (Claxton, Rae, Panchal, Damico, & Lundy, 2012; Sekhri, 2000).

Research managed care’s inception and study some examples. Be sure to investigate the perspectives about managed care from the vantage of both healthcare providers and patients. You can use the following keywords for your research—United States managed care, history of managed care, and managed care timeline.

Based on your research, answer the following questions in a 8- to 10-page Microsoft Word document:

What are the positive and negative aspects of managed care? Analyze the benefits and the risks for both providers and patients, and how providers should choose among managed care contracts. Conclude with your analysis and recommendations for managed care health plans. Your response should include answers to the following questions:
Summarize the history of when, how, and why managed care was developed.
Define and discuss each type of managed care organization (MCO)—health maintenance organization (HMO), preferred provider organization (PPO), and point of sale (POS).
Explain the positive and negative aspects, respectively, of managed care organization from the provider’s point of view—a physician and a healthcare facility—and from a patient’s point of view.
Explain the three types of incentives for providers for efficiency in the delivery of healthcare services. Explain who bears the financial risk—the provider, the patient, or the managed care organization.
Offer your recommendations, to accept or decline, for patients considering managed care health plans, with your rationale for each.

Environmental Controversy – Waste and Human Health

This week’s environmental controversy is centered on waste and human health. It addresses the question, should consumers have to pay for plastic or paper bags at grocery and other stores? Using the references below, write a 2 paragraph response to the questions posed to you. Remember to cite your sources using APA.

Background Information

Your textbook discusses the controversies associated with requiring consumers to pay for plastic and paper bags at their supermarkets and other stores. Advocates of the consumer pay system argue that bags are harmful to the environment and that under this system people would be encouraged to buy cloth bags or other reusable containers. Critics reply that many supermarkets already have drop bins for recycling old bags. They also argue that instead of making consumers pay for bags, individuals that provide their own bags should be given discounts from the store.
